New Horizons School was founded in 1994 by Carol Drewes, a retired school teacher from Capitola. When Carol noticed that some local homeless children were not in school during the day, she acquired text books and began to teach them in the park. With her compassion, Carol Drewes began a public service that addresses a special need in our community, the needs of homeless and transitional children to have a stable, loving environment for learning. This service is critical for allowing these children and their families to break out of a cycle of instability and homelessness. New Horizons School first established administrative offices and classrooms in the Capitola Community Church. New Horizons later established a partnership with Congregational Church of Soquel, where they are now housed. New Horizons summer programs have also been hosted for a number of years by Christ Lutheran Church. The good work of New Horizons School is truly made possible through community support.
